Artist Statement:
Caldwell often finds herself feeling as if she’s standing on a soap box. She was called to action after hearing about the predicament Native jewelers were in after being left with non-payment for a commission. As the field of jewelry is small, the idea of standing in solidarity with fellow artists felt a natural approach. Each element of the original buttons were used in designing this simple brooch, but with a strong sentiment in the making.
Artist bio:
Angela Caldwell is a Visiting Professor of Metalsmithing and Jewelry Design at Indiana University, Bloomington. Her current work examines how craft plays a roll in imagined women’s communities and how the act of making unites and strengthens bonds among female makers. Caldwell’s work has been exhibited in a solo exhibition at The Baltimore Jewelry Center, at Arrowmont’s Geoffrey A. Wolpert Gallery, The Gallery at Gatlinburg and in The Netherlands at Galerie Marzee, among many other regional and national exhibitions.
This pendant is a riff on my series of resin vortex pendants. Epoxy resin and powdered pigment is combined and poured into my hand made silicone rubber molds. I like the unexpected combination of the timeless and traditional metalsmithing, and the use of industrial (resin) materials.
