Artist Statement:
Concept + Adornment = Jewelry. An idea starts the design process, but the sensual pleasure of owning and wearing a desirable object is the result. The challenge is to satisfy the intellectual and the sensual for the wearer and the maker. This exchange is the heart of my practice. My aesthetic is modern, my chosen materials are non traditional and mostly non-precious. I work with washable paper, silicone rubber, polypropylene, polyester, and resin. Nothing pleases me more that someone loving the idea of paper earrings, a rubber necklace, or a polyester pendant.
I worked for many years as an art director, graphic designer and illustrator and came to jewelry by chance. A visit to a museum exhibition of a well known jewelry artist intrigued me so much that I enrolled in the jewelry program at a local college.
I found in jewelry a way to integrate my love of design and art history with my background in such disciplines as typography, textiles, painting, paper making and printmaking.
This pendant is a riff on my series of resin vortex pendants. Epoxy resin and powdered pigment is combined and poured into my hand made silicone rubber molds. I like the unexpected combination of the timeless and traditional metalsmithing, and the use of industrial (resin) materials.
